Rico’s Tea List & Descriptions

Please see Cold Beverages Menu for Prices

At Rico’s, we offer a special selection of traditional and unusual teas and tisanes (herbal infusions), all brewed from the loose leaf. We purchase them from importers who buy directly from the gardens and farms or plantations in which they are produced. Many are grown by organic or biodynamic methods and many in tea gardens and plantations known to be socially responsible (some Ethical Tea Society*, some certified Fair Trade*). We take care to brew each at the optimum temperature and brewing time to bring-out its best flavor.

BLACK TEAS

Full-fermentation imparts to Black the most robust color, flavors & caffeine content of the tea categories.

Unless otherwise noted, brew 3-4 minutes, a teaspoon of leaf to cup freshly boiled, filtered water (203 to 212°).

Organic Darjeeling Supreme*

The most sought-after of black teas, Darjeeling is imbued with a rich, complex, full-bodied character. Ours is pure, unblended from the Muscatel Valley in India.

Optimal brew time: 2 to 3 minutes.

Organic Ceylon*

A high-grown Ceylon. Smooth, elegant, bold and slightly astringent with a rich, amber liquor.

Organic English Breakfast*

The traditional English blend. Bold and robust with

fruity notes and amber liquor.

Organic Decaf English Breakfast*

A decaffeinated version of the same traditional

English blend.

FLAVORED BLACK TEAS

Organic Earl Grey**

Classic, full-bodied English blend with Bergamot. Traditional with milk & sweetener.

Organic Decaf Earl Grey**

A decaffeinated version of our Organic Earl Grey.

Organic Black Masala Chai**

Traditional Masala chai spices (Cinnamon, Cardamom, Ginger, Vanilla) blended with an organic Back create this very smooth, satisfying cup of the Indian classic. Traditionally served with milk and sweetener.

Rose Congou

Layering briefly with rose petals during manufacturing creates tea with this delicate, ethereal rose character.

Asian Blossom Congou

Light scenting with Osmanthus flowers creates this delicate floral tone with a light, tangy-peach note.

Lichee Congou

Delicate scenting with the sweet, slightly tart Chinese Lychee fruit, creates this refreshing, exotic tea

.

OOLONG TEAS

Partial fermentation makes Oolong the most varied in flavor of the tea categories. The different

percentages of fermentation create a range of Oolongs---each leaning toward Green or Black in character.

We brew a teaspoon of leaf 3 to 5 minutes in a cup of filtered water heated to between 185 and 190°.

Organic Jade Oolong Supreme

This very fine, hard-to-obtain, supreme Oolong from Thailand is oxidized 30%, making it closer to a green

than a black tea in character. Unusually delicate,

airy and ethereal.

Organic Nepal Oolong

A fruity aroma and an agreeable aftertaste characterize

this unique Oolong from the Himalayans

of Nepal. Oxidized to around 20%, this is the lightest, greenest of our oolongs. Very airy and ethereal.

Ti Kwan Yin
One of China’s most sought-after teas, this special aromatic oolong comes from the Fujian province of China. Oxidized 50 and 60%, it has a more robust, roasted flavor than our other oolongs.

GREEN TEAS

Green Tea is unfermented (only steamed, dried & pan-fried), creating the fresh, grassy flavor,

lower caffeine & higher nutrient content than Black.

Except where specified, we brew a teaspoon of leaf to a cup filtered water heated to 175°.

Jasmine Pearls Supreme*

A royal, delicate supreme green tea with a light,

fragrant taste and aroma of Jasmine flowers.

Brew 3 to 4 minutes.

Organic Silver Sprouts

Smooth, aromatic and fresh with low astringency and

a delicately-colored liquor.

Organic Ceylon Green

Special high-grown green tea. Delicate, very light, fresh, and slightly astringent.

Long Island Strawberry Green*

Strawberry and papaya round-out this exceptionally smooth Hunan-grown, Japan-style Sencha with a

delicious, fresh strawberry flavor.

WHITE TEAS

Only steamed and sun-dried, Whites Teas have the highest nutrients and lowest caffeine content as well as

the most delicate flavors of the tea categories. The most rare and expensive, they are connoisseur teas.

Brewed in filtered water heated to between 150 and 175°.

Organic Silver Needles Supreme*

Picked by hand two days a year, these rare Silver Needles from the Fujian Province are the tender young buds, covered in fine silver-white hairs, from a special strain of the tea plant. Each pound is comprised of 150,000 hand-picked buds. Delicate, refreshing, nectar-like brew with fresh aroma and pale yellow liquor Brew 2 to 5 minutes.

White Pearls Supreme*

Small, hand rolled pearls of the same supreme white tea. Once unfurled, the buds are lustrous, soft and

silvery. A mellow, delicate flavor with a slight sweetness and a pale golden liquor. Brew 2 to 3 mins.

Organic Pai-Mu-Tan

This white tea is a combination of buds and one or two of the surrounding tender young leaves that are harvested in the Spring. Mild, yet bolder than Silver Needles or White Pearls, it has a floral or honey aroma and a fresh, slightly sweet and mellow taste. Short brew time (as little as 40 seconds).

TISANES (Herbal)

Also known as Herbal Teas or Infusions, Tisanes are not true teas as they are not derived from the tea plant. They

come from a wide variety of different plants chosen for their health-giving properties and your drinking pleasure.

Brew to taste at least 4 minutes a teaspoon of leaf to a cup freshly boiled, filtered water (203 to 212°).

Organic Red Rooibos

Indigenous to South Africa, Rooibos has been used for centuries as a tasty beverage as well as for medicinal purposes. It is a rich natural source of antioxidants, flavonoids and other nutrients. Red Rooibos is slightly fermented after picking and dried in South-African sun. Brews to deep, reddish color with rich, earthy flavor.

Organic Green Rooibos

From the same plant as Red, Green Rooibos is sun-dried without fermentation, leaving it with even higher levels of health-giving substances. Brews to light green with fresh, grassy taste. Used widely in Africa as a nerve calmer, to reduce stress and insomnia, and to soothe colicky infants.

Organic Lemon Myrtle

Leaf of Autralian rainforest shrub with fresh, vibrant lemon-lime flavor. World’s richest known natural source of citral, which is non-acidic, anti-microbial/anti-fungal, and anti-oxidant with possible immune-stimulating benefits.

Organic Chamomile

The classic soothing Western herb with a fresh taste and aroma that fills the summer air in many country places. Usually taken in evening or before bedtime.

Organic Green Mate**

Mate contains mateine, an energizing substance similar to caffeine. Characterized by sharp, mature taste, balanced with sweet and bitter tones. Indigenous to South America.
